Why are scary movies not so scary any more?

You have to admit that horror films nowadays are more humorous than it is scary. I don't know why i still watch horror movies, maybe i hope something will scare me. What are some movies you think are scary? And what would make a scary movie frightening?

Because we've been oversaturated and desensitized. They've tried every trick in the book, so now every movie that comes out, "seen it!"

Directors have forgotten a basic rule of what makes a scary movie scary. What you don't see is scarier than what you do see. Recent movies focus on special effects and gore. But allowing the audience's own imagination to take over is what creates something really scary in people's minds. I'm not the kind to be scared by many movies. There were a couple though. The first Halloween, and The Shining are two that I remember. The first Halloween does such a great job of catching you off guard. The other thing that makes it so great is how they really play on your sense of anticipation. You know the killer is there. You know he's coming closer, but the characters often are stuck in a position where they can't do anything about that. So you just wait and watch knowing any second he'll be there. That's good scary movie film craft.
as you grow older you adjust to new things, things you use to be scared of, don't seem to scary anymore.

I think the art of suspence is dead. It's all about gore now...and gore is scarey.
The same reason why music is the way it is today. Nothing is as good as the classics. As for current horror movies, I do like the Saw series. But I'm more into the classics: The Shining, Nightmare on Elm Street (Part 1 ONLY), Halloween, etc.
Kids aren't afraid of anything because so much bad stuff is happening in the news so scary movies are just funny now. I think real life would make scary movies. i haven't seen a good scary movie in a while
because once a movie becomes a hit, every producers wants a piece of the pie and in turn they try to make a rip off..

Usually, because the stories stink. You see the "scares" coming. The plots and devices have become cliche. They hope to stun you with simple gore, noises and music to goose you, lame camera techniques and "spooky" atmosphere and visuals. Sadly, some people see this as genius (usually the young or those who haven't seen enough of it already) and so still the junk keeps getting churned out.

there hasnt really been any movies that have scared me. the closest is 'Jeepers Creepers' and 'Wrong Turn'. I thought 'House of Wax' would be at least a little scary, but that wasnt the case. At no point did i find it scary. creepy seeing Jared Padelecki's character going through the waxing process, but that's about it. I think 'Wrong Turn' tried to copy 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', but instead of having one, they have around 3 main ones, and it seems like they never die. 'Candyman' was kinda creepy. 'gothika' wasnt scary at all. 'Jeepers Creepers 2' wasnt really scary. none of the 'scream' movies was scary, but if you had to say which one was better, mayb 'scream 2'. oooo!!! 'Talos the mummy'. that was pretty freaky. see if you can watch that.
The world is a scary place, so people like freddy Kruger and Mike Myers have no real meaning
In our society today, what's really shocking anymore? Not a whole lot right?....It's not that directors have forgotten anything, or that they have run out of material....It's just that they're adapting to change...Nowadays it's all about the shock, the more the merrier, the more heads chopped off and limbs amputated the better....Well at first it was alright, it was pretty shocking, but we have been seeing this for a number of years now, ever since the 2000's hit...It's getting old...Which is why I am begging filmmakers to get back in touch with what horror is all about...The unknown, the mystery, not showing too much, but just enough to let you know what's coming.....The biggest human fear, is fear of the unknown....In the "horror" movies today, you know everything, they just try the same scare tactics in different ways, try and show you more blood, more insides just recently cut out of one of the killers victims...I admit though, I love horror, always have, my favorite genre, so I do enjoy the horror movies, but I can say they don't have any taste...If they want to show gore to the extreme, why not put a little style in it like Sam Raimi did with Evil dead, one of the goriest movies you'll see and it was made in the 70's......And they're just pumping these things out day after day it seems like, no thought no good technique, it's Hollywood, what do you expect?....And also, what is with all the girls or kids that move all twisted (ring, grudge, etc...) enough is enough!
I don't even think they're funny.At least in the 80s,the bad ones are funny.I don't know what has gotten into society and their low standards for horror.It's all the same "spook" crap...and it's rated PG-13!How can you scare the bejesus out of someone with a PG-13 movie?Yeah,it worked with Poltergeist,but that's pretty much it.Creativity has gone out the window.I thought I was seeing something in M. Night Shymalon,but not so much anymore.Hopefully,soon they'll lighten up on CGI and put more effort into movies.If they can't be scary,at least make them funny scary like the Nightmare on Elmstreet sequels.Miss seeing Freddy in a witch costume saying,"I'll get you my pretty,and your little soul too!"?I do.
Horror movies today are predicatble. Some hot young starlet with big breast is going to die, the person you least expect to do it is going to be the killer. The couple in the back seat of the car having sex is going to die. And not to mention the music is always the same. Film makers need to go back 50 years and study the works of some of the film makers that started the genre. Alfred Hitchcock for instance. The original Haunting of Hill House is excellent. As is the remake with Liam Niesen in it titled The Haunting. The script is pretty much parrell to the original with a few additions. What really makes a movie "scary" is not being able to predict what is coming next, but on the other hand, you don't want to through in too many curve balls otherwise the audiance won't have any clue what's going on!
